See the Difference with Your Own Eyes
Whether red, white or raised, scars can be an unattractive reminder of cuts, abrasions or severe acne. Some can even be painful or itchy. The clinicians at SkinCare Physicians & Surgeons can select from several lasers, often in combination with injections, to improve the appearance of scars.
- Ridged or bumpy scars – CO2 Fraxel, and the Erbium:YAG lasers can vaporize and smooth bumpy surface of these scars. Vbeam laser will also help to flatten a thick, raised scar. Fraxel laser is promising new technology used to flatten thick scars.
- Dark red and brown scars – Vbeam laser can help to remove redness and pinkness from scars while Alexandrite laser will help to remove the brown discoloration from the scar.
- Depressed scars – CO2 laser is often used for the treatment of depressed scars as well as thick, raised scars as it helps the scar blend into the surrounding tissue. CO2 lasers are often used after Mohs surgery to better blend in skin grafts and skin flaps.
- White scars – Fraxel laser holds promise for blending these scars with the surrounding normal skin.
Therapeutic injections may be used alone or in combination with laser therapy and topical dressings to successfully treat scars. Injections are most often used to treat thick, raised scars (keloids). Localized cortisone injections or a combination of cortisone and another powerful chemotherapeutic medication helps to flatten keloids. Typically, more than one injection is necessary – usually a series performed every several weeks for optimal results.
Other less invasive laser/light treatments may also improve acne scars without wounding the skin surface.
